Music: Boyd Andersson/Squim – White Walls

While listening to this collaboration between avant bass maestro Boyd Andersson and Chris Phillips (the latter performing under the name Squim), I walked away from my computer and did some morning stuff while it played in the background. The way the track – a mixture of bass scratches, drones, and electronic intrusions – just kept building and building took me aback. It brought to mind the terrifying and complex sound of Gyorgy Ligeti’s massive vocal piece “Lux Aeterna”, of all things. “White Walls” doesn’t resolve with any sense of calm however. The track just continues to break apart piece by piece before being absorbed into the ground.
